Pergolas

What's Included

A pergola defines an outdoor space and adds some shade without fully enclosing it. Size, post placement, height and how it connects to the house all affect how it looks and how well it works. We plan those details around how you want to use the space.

  • Freestanding wood pergolas
  • Pergolas attached to the house
  • Stone-wrapped columns and bases
  • Concrete pads or footings
  • Staining or sealing the wood
  • Pergolas paired with patios and outdoor kitchens

Pergolas FAQs

What's the difference between a pergola and a gazebo?

A pergola has posts and an open slatted roof that gives partial shade, and it's usually square or rectangular. A gazebo has a solid roof, often a peaked or many-sided shape, and gives full overhead cover from sun and rain.

How much shade does a pergola provide?

An open pergola provides partial, filtered shade depending on the spacing and direction of the top slats. More shade can be added with tighter slat spacing, shade cloth, or climbing plants.

Should a pergola be attached to the house or freestanding?

An attached pergola extends a back door or patio directly. A freestanding pergola can be placed anywhere in the yard. Attaching to the house involves the roofline and wall structure, so it depends on what's there.
