Carpentry FAQs

What's the difference between rough and finish carpentry?

Rough carpentry is the structural work — framing walls, floors and roofs — that gets covered up. Finish carpentry is the visible work: trim, molding, built-ins and other details installed after drywall and flooring.

Paint-grade or stain-grade trim — what's the difference?

Paint-grade trim is typically made from MDF or finger-jointed wood, since paint hides the joints. Stain-grade trim uses solid wood with attractive grain, because the wood itself stays visible. Stain-grade usually takes more material selection and care.

Can built-ins be added to an existing room?

Yes. Common spots include around fireplaces, in alcoves, under stairs and in home offices. Outlets, vents and wall framing all affect the design, so it helps to see the space first.

How do I get an estimate?
